History in Print featuring 'Buildings of Texas,' Vol. 2

  • Proler Chapel, Congregation Emanu El 1500 Sunset Boulevard Houston, TX, 77005 United States (map)

Rediscover the architectural treasures of the Lone Star State when author/photographer Gerald Moorhead presents an illustrated lecture on his landmark book, Buildings of Texas: East North Central, Panhandle and South Plains, and West during History in Print on November 19.

In a years-long effort, Moorhead and a team of dedicated contributors assembled this impressive work. More than 1,000 building entries survey the most important and representative examples of forts, courthouses, commercial buildings, houses and churches. The book provides accessible architectural and cultural histories, and also serves as a practical guide with 350 illustrations and 45 maps.

Buildings of Texas: East, North Central, Panhandle and South Plains, and West is the latest volume in the Buildings of the United States series.

Developed under the auspices of the Society of Architectural Historians, Buildings of the United States will eventually encompass 60 volumes written by leading local and national scholars and heavily illustrated with photographs and maps.

After his presentation, Moorhead will sign copies of his newest book. The companion volume, Buildings of Texas: Central, South, and Gulf Coast, will also be available for purchase at the event. The books cost $85 each; we'll also offer both volumes for $150.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 19, in the Proler Chapel at Congregation Emanu El, 1500 Sunset Boulevard. Admission to History in Print is free for Preservation Houston/Pier & Beam members and members of Congregation Emanu El. Admission is $5 per person for the general public.

Free parking is available in the garage located behind the synagogue (enter from Sunset Boulevard using the east driveway, closest to Main Street; if the gate is closed, use the call box to let the guard know you are there for History in Print). Congregation Emanu El is also a short walk from the Hermann Park/Rice University on MetroRail’s Red Line.
