Preservation Services
We’re here to help you protect the places that matter — whether that’s a home, a small business, a nonprofit or an entire neighborhood. If you’re considering landmark designation or want to preserve the character of your property or community, we’ll guide you through your options and help you get started.
In Houston, the best safeguard against demolition is City of Houston Protected Landmark designation. Historic properties within City of Houston Historic Districts may also be protected. If your property qualifies, we may be able to prepare a Protected Landmark nomination at no cost to you. You’ll find more details in our guide to local landmarks. We can also help with city historic district nominations and provide guidance on other city, state and federal designations.
Planning a preservation project? We can help you explore grants and tax incentives that may apply to your property. We’ll also connect you with designers, contractors and craftspeople who have experience with projects similar to yours and the materials your property requires. Our team is also available to speak at neighborhood meetings and share details on preservation tools and options.
Helping Houstonians protect the places they love
We focus on smaller-scale efforts led by individuals, nonprofits, small businesses and neighborhood groups that may not have the budget to hire a private consultant. Our staff and volunteers have helped nominate a wide range of historic properties across Houston and supported neighborhood groups in creating historic districts at local and national levels, including Audubon Place, First Montrose Commons, Main Street/Market Square and Independence Heights.
