Join Preservation Houston for a rare big-screen showing of Brewster McCloud, Robert Altman’s cult classic, at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 20, at the historic River Oaks Theatre. We’re proud to co-present this screening at the recently restored Art Deco gem — and to celebrate one of the most unusual (and unforgettable) movies ever filmed in Houston.
Released in 1970, Brewster McCloud follows a reclusive young man (played by Bud Cort) who lives in the bowels of the Astrodome and dreams of building a working set of wings so he can fly. Part dark comedy, part surreal fantasy, the film skewers everything from celebrity culture to law enforcement — all using Houston itself as a visual punchline. This is Altman at his most irreverent, capturing the city in a moment of heady ambition and architectural optimism.
With the Astrodome marking its 60th anniversary — and 55 years since the film wrapped production — there’s no better time to revisit this wildly original story and its unforgettable view of Houston on the cusp of the ’70s.
Tickets are $15 ($12 for students and seniors) and available now through the River Oaks Theatre box office. Reserve your seat today →
We hope you’ll join us for this delightfully weird tribute to Houston on film!
