Time & Place: 'Plaque to Basics'

Join us for the launch of Time & Place, Preservation Houston’s new midday talk series exploring how preservation and history shape the places we share. Our first session, Plaque to Basics: Historic Designations Explained, starts with something we hear often: “There was a plaque on that building — so why was it torn down?”

Not all historic designations are the same. Some simply honor a site’s significance, while others provide protection from demolition or offer financial benefits to property owners. In this session, Preservation Services Director Emily Ardoin will walk you through the major types of designations available in Houston — what they mean, the protections or incentives they offer, and how to secure one. Whether you’re a property owner, neighborhood advocate, or just care about Houston’s past, you’ll leave with a clearer understanding of how these tools can help recognize and protect places that matter.

The talk will begin at noon Friday, September 12, in Room J-204 of the Jones Youth Building at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 5501 Main Street. Registration is $10 for PH members and $15 for non-members; add $15 for a Picnic boxed lunch or bring your own. Water and iced tea will be provided.
