Good Brick Awards

Every Good Brick Award tells a story of vision, skill and dedication to preserving our shared history. For nearly 50 years, these honors have recognized excellence in restoration, rehabilitation and creative reuse. From careful restorations to bold adaptive reuse and advocacy, Good Brick winners set the standard for protecting the places that matter.

Honoring the best in local preservation

Preservation Houston has presented the Good Brick Awards since 1979 to recognize outstanding contributions to the preservation, restoration and enhancement of Houston's architectural and cultural heritage.

What the Good Brick Awards recognize

The Good Brick Awards are rooted in the preservation of physical space, but we present awards that recognize the full range of work that makes preservation possible, including:

  • Restoration, rehabilitation or adaptive reuse of a historic building or site

  • New construction or additions that enhance an existing historic context

  • Craftspeople and design professionals whose work supports preservation

  • Property owners who are exceptional stewards of historic places

  • Preservation-related programs, planning efforts and publications

  • Outstanding service or leadership in the preservation field

Nominate a project for a Good Brick Award

Anyone may submit a Good Brick Award nomination. Nominating yourself will not affect your chance of receiving an award. Building and physical site projects must be located in Harris County; other nomination types should have a clear connection to Houston or Harris County.

Nominations for the 2027 Good Brick Awards are open now and are due by 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, 2026.

Meet the 2026 Good Brick Award winners

Preservation Houston’s 2026 Good Brick Awards showcase the breadth of preservation work unfolding across the city, from the careful revival of a neighborhood print shop and the rebirth of an Art Deco movie theater to inventive projects involving neighborhood street markers and a midcentury Yugoslavian sidewalk kiosk. Together, these projects reflect the many ways preservation takes shape in Houston — across different neighborhoods, at different scales and through the work of many hands.

2026 special honors

Legacy Business Award

The 2026 Legacy Business Award is being presented to Hamilton Shirts, one of Houston’s oldest family-owned businesses and America’s longest-standing bespoke shirtmaker. Founded in 1883, Hamilton maintains a tradition of hand-cut, custom shirtmaking passed down through four generations. As Houston has grown and changed, Hamilton has remained a steady presence, reflecting the city’s long history of skilled craft, family enterprise and businesses built to last.

Preservation Houston President’s Award

The recipient of this year’s Preservation Houston President’s Award is Steven F. Curry, FAIA, a tireless advocate for historic preservation in Houston and across Texas, and a trusted advisor and partner within the preservation community. Through decades of professional practice and public service — including leadership with Houston Mod, service on the Docomomo US Awards Committee, and as a member of the Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission — Steve has helped shape thoughtful, informed approaches to saving significant places. His commitment is reflected in his own work, including a 2016 Good Brick Award for the restoration of the Bendit House (1953, Lars Bang).
