2023 Everett Street open house

  • 2023 Everett Street Houston, TX, 77009 United States (map)

Join us Saturday afternoon, April 11, for an open house at 2023 Everett Street, a c. 1903 Near Northside cottage that has survived more than 120 years with nearly all its historic elements intact. The property went on the market in March and is expected to go under contract soon, but we’ve arranged a private look inside before it sells.

The house needs work, but it is a remarkable time capsule of early 20th-century Houston residential architecture — jigsaw-cut gingerbread trim, a carved front door and a stained glass transom outside; original shiplap, wainscoting and millwork, including 12-inch baseboards, inside.

The Near Northside grew up in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to house workers at the nearby Southern Pacific rail shops and the old Port of Houston at Allen’s Landing, with modest wood-frame homes lining its streets. The neighborhood largely held for decades: Interstate 45 took part of its western edge in the late 1950s, but the interior blocks saw almost no new construction until the 1990s. The result is one of the most intact collections of early working-class housing in central Houston, and 2023 Everett is among the best examples in the city.

Hugo Cantu, who has owned the house for about 25 years, will be on hand to answer questions and share what it has meant to steward it for a quarter century.

This event is free and open to Preservation Houston members and their guests. RSVP by April 10 to let us know you plan to attend.

Thanks to Lin Chong for arranging access to the house.
