Preservation Houston / Pier & Beam Happy Hour

  • Axelrad 1517 Alabama Street Houston, TX, 77004 United States (map)

We’re getting together for another happy hour for Preservation Houston and Pier & Beam members on Tuesday, April 7, and we’d love to see you there!

This informal gathering is a chance to unwind, catch up with fellow members and share our enthusiasm for Houston’s architecture and history. This time we’ll be at Axelrad, 1517 Alabama Street, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The building dates from around 1923, when German immigrants Gertrude and David Axelrad built it as a family grocery store and residence. After sitting vacant for years and falling into serious disrepair, the structure was restored and converted into the Axelrad beer garden, which opened in 2016. That work received a Good Brick Award from Preservation Houston in 2018. Among the investors who helped make the project possible was Gigi Yellen Kohn, the Axelrads’ great-granddaughter, who grew up in the building.

Today the restored building anchors a lively courtyard filled with picnic tables, fire pits and Axelrad’s hammock garden, while colorful murals add to the relaxed atmosphere. The neighboring Luigi’s Pizzeria makes it easy to pair a slice with whatever’s on tap.

Whether you’ve been a Preservation Houston member for years or are just getting involved, this is a great opportunity to meet others who care about the places that shape our city. You’ll also have a chance to chat with us about our work, upcoming events and the latest preservation news in a relaxed setting.

Feel free to bring a friend who might be interested in Preservation Houston. As always, the evening will be casual: come when you can, leave when you’re ready and pick up your own tab.

Take a moment to RSVP so we can plan accordingly. We’re looking forward to seeing you April 7!
