Preservation Services

Preservation Houston is here to support anyone working to protect a historic place, whether it’s a home, a small business, a nonprofit, or an entire neighborhood. If you’re exploring the possibility of landmark designation or looking for ways to preserve the character of your property or neighborhood, we can help you get started and understand your options.

In Houston, the strongest protection against demolition for a historic building is City of Houston Protected Landmark designation. Historic buildings within City of Houston Historic Districts may also be protected. If your property qualifies, reach out to us - we may be able to complete a Protected Landmark nomination at no cost to you. See our guide to local landmarks for more information. We can also help with city historic district nominations and provide guidance for other designations at the city, state and federal levels.

If you’re planning a preservation project, PH can help you explore potential grants or tax incentives that may apply to your property. We can also connect you with local designers, contractors, and craftspeople who have experience working with similar buildings and materials. We’re available to speak at neighborhood meetings to share more detailed information about preservation tools and options.

Helping Houstonians protect the places they love

Our direct assistance is geared toward smaller-scale efforts led by individuals, nonprofits, small businesses, and neighborhood groups that may not have the budget to hire a private consultant. Our staff and volunteers have successfully nominated a wide range of historic properties across Houston. We’ve also supported neighborhood groups in their efforts to establish historic districts at both the local and national levels, including Audubon Place, First Montrose Commons, Main Street/Market Square, and Independence Heights.
